Expand/CollapseHISTORICAL NOTE

The first Minnesota statewide dental organization, known as the "Old State Association," was founded in 1871. Its main purpose, the passage of a state dental practices law, was never attained and the organization ceased to exist in 1876.

On November 21, 1883, an organizational meeting was held to form a new statewide dental association. A constitution and bylaws were drawn up and adopted January 16, 1884, at the first Minnesota State Dental Association [Minnesota State Dental Association] meeting. The articles of incorporation were filed July 16, 1884.

Headed by a president, vice-president, secretary, and treasurer, the association was to elevate the standard of dental science, art,and literature; promote among dentists mutual improvement, social intercourse, and good feeling; and collectively, to have cognizance of the common interests of the dental profession in Minnesota.

The association was greatly instrumental in the passage of the first state dental law (1885) which created the State Board of Dental Examiners and required the registration of all dentists practicing in the state. During its existence the association has continued to work actively for the further regulation of dentistry through legislation.

In August, 1914 the association underwent a reorganization through the adoption of a seven district society plan. The plan divided the state into seven districts--Southern, Southeastern, Minneapolis, St. Paul, Northwestern, West Central, and Duluth--and also created an executive council. The council, consisting of the original four officers and a representative from each district, was endowed with managerial control of the association. In 1970 the organization's name was changed to the Minnesota Dental Association.

The association publishes North-West Dentistry, the official journal of three state dental associations: Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota.
