Edward R. Brandt was born November 17, 1931 in Satanta, Kansas and grew up in
Manitoba, Canada. He married Marie Schmidtke in 1953. He earned a bachelor's degree
at the University of Minnesota in 1954, a master's degree at George Washington
University, and a Ph.D. at the University of Minnesota in 1970. In 1958 Brandt began
a ten year career as a foreign service officer with the U.S. Information Agency, and
was stationed in Dacca (then East Pakistan) and in Germany. He returned to Minnesota
in the 1960s, became involved in local politics, and was elected to the Minnesota
House of Representatives in 1968 from the 41st District. He was re-elected in 1970,
but declined to run in 1972. Brandt was a founder of the Association of Non-Smokers
Rights, and had a twenty year career teaching political science at the University of
St. Thomas. He died January 17, 2013.
