BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Crooks, also known as Sacred Stone Man, and Tukon-wa-cha-sta, was born in 1829. He lived near the Lower Sioux Agency in the Minnesota River Valley, and protected white captives during the U.S.-Dakota War. He died near Morton, Minnesota, on December 27, 1899, and is buried in Saint Cornelia's Episcopal Church Cemetery near Redwood Falls, Minnesota. Crooks' Dakota name is found spelled in various ways in the documents and in external sources.
