Expand/CollapseBIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

John Ronaldson Cummins was born July 24, 1834, in Ireland to George (1794-1847) and Matilda B. (Grubb) (1807-1866) Cummins. With his family he emigrated to the United States sometime prior to 1850, settling near Media, Pennsylvania. In 1856 he purchased a farm near Eden Prairie, Minnesota, settling there the following year. Except for two years' employment as a carpenter at the Upper Indian Agency on Leech Lake (May 1865-May 1867), Cummins remained in Eden Prairie until his October 1908 retirement. He then moved to Minneapolis but spent most of his time traveling throughout the United States, Europe, Central America, Canada, Jamaica, Cuba, and elsewhere. Cummins served on the Eden Prairie town board of supervisors (1862-1865, 1871-circa 1889), was town road overseer (circa 1871-1872), and was a member of the Minnesota Horticultural Society (circa 1894-1917) and the Minnesota Territorial Pioneers Association. He married Martha (Mattie) Ann Clark (d. 1908) on November 27, 1862 and Mary E. Nolan on October 1, 1912. Cummins died in Minneapolis on January 27, 1921 and is buried in Lakewood Cemetery in Minneapolis. His Eden Prairie farm house was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
