Expand/CollapseBIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

William Rainey Marshall was born October 17, 1825 near Columbia, Missouri, the son of Joseph and Abigail Black (Shaw) Marshall. In 1849 he moved to St. Anthony, Minnesota Territory where he opened a hardware store and served (1849-1850) in the Minnesota Territorial House of Representatives. Two years later he removed to St. Paul, where he engaged in the hardware and newspaper businesses. In 1854, Marshall married Abigail Elliott Langford (1826-1893), daughter of George and Chloe (Sweeting) Langford and a brother of Nathaniel Pitt Langford (1832-1911). He enlisted as a private in the Union Army and was commissioned a lieutenant colonel in the 7th Regiment. He served as the regiment's colonel between 1863 and 1865, seeing service in the U.S.-Dakota War and in the battles of Nashville, Mobile, and Fort Blakely. He was brevetted brigadier general in March 1865 and served as Minnesota's governor from 1866 to 1870. Later, he was a railroad and warehouse commissioner (1874-1886) and served as president (1868) and secretary (1893-1895) of the Minnesota Historical Society. Marshall died in Pasadena, California on January 8, 1896, and is buried in Oakland Cemetery (St. Paul).
