Lewis A. Grant Lewis Addison Grant was born in Bennington, Vermont on January 17, 1829. He was the son of James and Elizabeth (Wyman) Grant. He was educated in schools in Vermont and New Jersey and was a lawyer by profession. He practiced law in Vermont prior to the Civil War. From 1866-1884 he lived in Des Moines, Iowa, and held a number of positions in that city, among them being the director of the Rock River Improvement Company (1866-1867); the Grant and Godfrey Law Firm (1867-1868); the Grant, Regan and Company, founders of the town of Waukee, Iowa (1868-1869); and president of the New England Loan and Trust Company (1876-1882).

In 1884 he moved to Minneapolis, which was his residence until his death on March 20, 1918. He was engaged in the real estate and securities business in Minneapolis. From 1890-1893 he was assistant secretary of war.

On March 11, 1857 he married Sarah Augusta Hartwell, who died January 27, 1859. They had one daughter, Sarah Augusta (Mrs. George W. Stone). On September 11, 1863 he married Mary Helen Pierce, daughter of Alfred Pierce. They had two sons, Dr. Ulysses Sherman Grant and James Colfax Grant. Ulysses Grant married Avis Winchell, daughter of Newton H. Winchell, professor of geology at the University of Minnesota.

This collection includes the papers and accounts of Lewis Grant; Civil War general orders and correspondence; a manuscript by James Colfax Grant on the Civil War; tax receipts for land in Hennepin County (Minn.); insurance policies including one for fire insurance on a home in Minneapolis; and copies of Lewis Grant's letters to his family while touring Europe (1889). Family papers consist of copies of the proprietors' records of the town of Searsburg, Vermont (1781-1817); deeds to land in Vermont, issued mainly to Alfred Pierce; a few papers of James Colfax Grant, commissary of subsistence in the United States Army in 1898; genealogical notes and charts; and family memorabilia.
