Expand/CollapseBIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Professor T. L. HaeckerTheophilus Haecker, the father of dairying in Minnesota, was born in Medina County, Ohio, the fourth child in a family of twelve, on May 4, 1846. In 1853 the Haecker family moved to Wisconsin and settled on a farm in Cottage Grove where Haecker received his training in dairy farming from his mother. In 1863 Haecker began school at the University of Wisconsin, enlisting in the Civil War the following year. In 1867 he returned to school in Wisconsin and also began teaching. In 1874 the governor of Wisconsin, a former neighbor of the family, asked Haecker to work for him. For the next 17 years Haecker held the position of executive clerk in the governor's office, continued to farm and develop his dairy enterprise, and taught at the University of Wisconsin dairy school.

On the recommendation of Governor Knute Nelson and John S. Pillsbury, Haecker was selected by the Board of Regents of the University of Minnesota to head the dairy department of the College of Agriculture in 1891, a position which he held for 27 years. Haecker was the author of the Haecker feeding standard for dairy cattle and was a pioneer organizer of cooperative dairying in Minnesota. Haecker's influence made the Clarks Grove Cooperative Creamery in Freeborn County a model for the rest of the state and Minnesota the main center of co-operatives in the country by the beginning of the 20th century.
