BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Martin Newton Kellogg was born on June 29, 1822, in Franklin, Delaware County, New York, the son of Joseph and Harriet Kingsley Smith Newton Kellogg. He enlisted in the United States army in 1845 and served until 1850 as a private in the band of the Sixth United States Infantry. He played the clarinet. Kellogg fought in General Winfield Scott's campaign in Mexico during the Mexican War (1847) and was the first soldier to plant the American flag on the walls of Chapultepec. After the Mexican War he was stationed at Jefferson Barracks near St. Louis (1848) and at Fort Snelling, where he arrived in April 1849.
When Kellogg was discharged from the army in 1850 he settled in St. Paul (as did his mother, sister, and three brothers) and became a merchant. He established the first drugstore in Minnesota Territory, which he operated in partnership with William W. Hichcox (1850-1853) and then with J. W. Bond (1853-1857). In 1858, after selling his interest in the drugstore to Bond, Kellogg purchased a toy and variety store. He operated this business until 1882, when failing eyesight forced him to sell it. At various times he was in the produce business and the commission and shipping business; he also invested in St. Paul real estate. Kellogg was interested in astronomy and meteorology and was known in St. Paul for his weather predictions. He was a member of the Old Settlers' Association of Minnesota and the Minnesota Historical Society. Kellogg married Frances Isabella Esson in Winona, Minnesota, on October 29, 1855. They had four children: Rodney Parker, Mary Beatrice, Lenora Janette Hale, and Cecilia Rodenita Adelaide Newton (Adelaide). He died in St. Paul on February 20, 1896.
Information for this biographical sketch was obtained from the scrapbook and from the following sources: Hopkins, Timothy, The Kelloggs in the Old World and the New, 1903, pages 769, 1441; Minnesota Historical Society Collections, vol. 14 (Minnesota Biographies, 1655-1912), 1912, page 394; Minnesota Historical Society Scrapbooks, vol. 9, page 48; and Newsom, T. M., Pen Pictures of St. Paul, Minnesota and Biographical Sketches of Old Settlers, 1866, pages 117-118.
SCOPE AND CONTENTS
Included in the collection are real estate transactions that Kellogg and his family were involved in (1850-1887), his work as a merchant and the founder of the first drugstore in Minnesota (1850), a military pension claim he made due to his blindness (1888), a list of Mississippi river data (1844-1887), a volume of handwritten music scores, and a clarinet fingering chart (circa 1847). Also includes 1 photograph album given to Mrs. Martin N. Kellogg (December 25, 1863) which includes family portraits; and 7 daguerreotypes of Kellogg family members.
The microfilmed scrapbook (M528) consists mainly of news clippings that reflect Kellogg's activities and interests including various business ventures, historical events and figures, and contemporary political and social affairs.
The hospital records (+219, Folder 2) consist of pages from a record book (1846, 1848-1849) presumably kept by Kellogg while serving at the Fort Atkinson Hospital (Fort Atkinson, Iowa). The pages contain patients' names, diagnoses of their ailments, and a daily record of the medical treatment and drugs they received. Folder 1 of +219 contains certificates and the miscellaneous printed matter.
