BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Bearman, of Minneapolis, was a long-time civil rights activist, and a leader of public educational efforts. She served as secretary of the Minneapolis chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), and was a member of the Minnesota DFL Education Foundation board. She was a graduate of West High School (Minneapolis) (1953), earned a bachelor's degree in studio art from the University of Minnesota (1956), and was active in such organizations as the Minneapolis Civil Rights Commission, the Urban Coalition of Minneapolis, the Minneapolis League of Women Voters, and the Affirmative Action Task Force of the Hennepin County Political Women's Caucus.
SCOPE AND CONTENTS
Materials pertain to Bearman's involvement in the Minneapolis Chapter of the NAACP, the Committee for Integrated Education, and other local pro-integration and human rights groups. Some files center on a lawsuit brought by private individuals against the Minneapolis Board of Education to compel it to implement a judicial order to integrate the public school system, a suit against the board for its policy of firing minority teachers with low seniority, and a class action lawsuit brought by the Minneapolis NAACP against the State of Minnesota claiming that children in segregated Minneapolis schools were being deprived of their right to receive an adequate education.
