Expand/CollapseBIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Hilding Alfred Swanson was born in Sweden June 30, 1885 to Andrew J. Check Swanson (1855-1917) and his wife Nilla A. Nilsdotter (1857-1913). Hilding's siblings included Jennie Charlotte, Gothfred Swantie, John Albert, Edwin Oscar, Hannah Augusta, Mabel Ellen, and William Jennings Swanson. The family emigrated to America in 1888, and came to Brainerd, Minnesota, shortly thereafter. After graduating from the Yale University law school in 1912, he returned to Brainerd and joined his brothers Gothfred and William in the law firm of Swanson, Swanson, and Swanson. Many of their clients were the Ojibwe Indians living in Crow Wing County and in the Mille Lacs area. He was interested in the history of Crow Wing County, belonged to several civic groups in Brainerd, and was president of the Crow Wing County Historical Society. He served in the Minnesota House of Representatives from 1917 to 1919 and in the state Senate from 1919 to 1925. Swanson married Alice Marie Elmgren on June 24, 1919. She died in December 1963. He died March 29, 1964.

Charlotte Helen Jackson, the daughter of Hilding Swanson's sister Mabel Ellen, married Peter Albert Zeglin in 1950. The Zeglins established and operated a summer resort hotel located on an island at Waconia, Minnesota, known as Coney Island of the West, from 1888 to 1939.
