BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Robert LeRoy
Herbst was born in Minneapolis on October 5, 1935, the son of Walter Peter and
Bernice Mickey (Mikkelson) Herbst. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Forest
Management from the University of Minnesota in 1957. Herbst was involved in many
conservation-related organizations as a leader, official, advisor, or director,
including stints with the Minnesota Department of Conservation (1957-1963;
1966-1969) and with Keep Minnesota Green (1963-1966); as national executive director
of the Izaac Walton League of America (1969-1970); as executive director of Trout
Unlimited; as president of the Lake Superior Center 1990-1992); as board chair of
the Land Between the Lakes Association (1983-1992); in various executive positions
with the Natural Resources Council of America (1984-1992); as commissioner of the
Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (1971-1977); and as Assistant Secretary
for Fish, Wildlife, and National Parks in the United States Department of the
Interior (1977-1980).
Herbst married Evelyn Clarice Elford September 22, 1956, and they made their home in Annandale, Virginia.
