Expand/CollapseHISTORICAL NOTE

Green Giant Company had its beginnings with the 1903 incorporation of the Minnesota Valley Canning Company (MVCC), which established offices in Le Sueur, Minnesota. The firm marketed white cream style corn and, by 1907, canned peas. By 1928 it had canning facilities in Cokato, Montgomery, and Winsted, Minnesota. In 1930 it merged with Wisconsin Central Canneries, Inc. and the following year organized a Canadian affiliate, Fine Foods of Canada, Inc. (later Green Giant of Canada). Expansion in territory and products continued. In 1935 the company contracted with the Leo Burnett Company for advertising services, a relationship that continued for decades.

In 1950 the name was changed to Green Giant Company. The company experimented with frozen food products and acquired, operated, and sold restaurants, meat companies, a garden center business, and mushroom companies. The company's Green Giant mascot appeared in 1925 and has undergone name and stylistic changes since. In 1972 the Little Green Sprout appeared as the Giant's apprentice.

In 1979 Green Giant merged with the Pillsbury Company and in 2001 was acquired by General Mills. The Green Giant brand was acquired by B&G Foods in 2015.

Expand/CollapsePAYROLL RECORDS

Access restricted. Closed for 100 years.

Most registers break down recorded information by plant and then into categories that include general, factory, farm, truck. Separate payrolls were kept for men, women, and foreign laborers. Information for each worker includes name, hours worked, hourly wages, deductions for taxes, deductions for board and other items. Of special interest are registers that document foreign migrant labor. These also separate workers according to their place of origin including Barbados, Trinidad and Jamaica.
