Expand/CollapseBIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Born in 1943, Mary Hawker Bakeman is a specialist in family research, a graduate of the National Institute on Genealogical Research, and the author of dozens of books and guides for genealogists and historians, many of which are in the Minnesota Historical Society library.

Roseville's Lexington School building was closed in 1991, and demolished in 1993. The Friends of Lexington Area Parks group was organized in 1995 and was concerned with the preservation and use of the vacant 8-acre parcel at the corner of County Road B and Lexington Avenue, in the face of possible commercial development. Bakeman coordinated this project. Through extensive citizen involvement, this property was set aside for park use and developed into a recreational facility. It was dedicated in 2001.

Bakeman also coordinated a preservation effort to reclaim the nearly-forgotten Ramsey County Poor Farm Cemetery in Maplewood from other uses and to protect it from development.
