HISTORICAL NOTE
Peter Schlampp established his furrier business in Minneapolis in 1904. He learned the trade from his family in Germany. The firm performed all facets from selecting skins, designing patterns, manufacturing products, and marketing for a generally-upscale clientele. Peter's son, Edward, and Edward's son, Edward, Jr., continued to lead the firm. The business flourished into the 1970s, and slowly introduced ready-to-wear clothing. Sales declined in the 1980s, owing at least in part to an economic recession. In 1991 the business was sold to employee William Skrie, who closed it shortly thereafter.
For many years Schlampp's did business at 2919 Hennepin Avenue in the Uptown neighborhood of Minneapolis. It moved to the nearby Calhoun Square indoor shopping mall in mid-1991. Over the course of its existence the business was known as P. Schlampp & Co., P. Schlampp & Son, Schlampp Furs, and finally Schlampp's.
