BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Jannette Sykes was born near Lockport, New York, July 29, 1833. Her family later migrated to Ohio, where she married Joseph Warren DeCamp on May 30, 1852. The couple moved to Shakopee, Minnesota, in 1855, and in 1861 to the Red Wood (Lower Sioux) Indian Agency, where Joseph was in charge of a sawmill. In August 1862 she and her young children were captured and held captive by the Dakota for several weeks during the U.S.-Dakota War. Joseph DeCamp died from injuries suffererd in the Battle of Birch Coulee. Jannette married Reverend Joshua Sweet, an Episcopal chaplain at Fort Ridgely, on May 31, 1866. Joshua Sweet died in 1874, and Jannette eventually made her home in California, where she died at Alameda on June 25, 1920.
SCOPE AND CONTENTS
Includes a scrapbook compiled by and newspaper obituaries of Jannette DeCamp Sweet; marriage documents of her son Benjamin E. DeCamp; papers and photographs of her grandson Harry Cornelius DeCamp Kennedy; correspondence, diaries, and photographs of her great granddaughter Donas Jean Russell; World War II and other papers of Donas' husband John Raymond Russell, Jr.; and an autobiographical essay by Robin Hanvey Russell, Jannette's great-great-great granddaughter, that contains substantial family history data. The collection also includes biographical data on James E. Russell, a South Dakota mining expert. Except for the material relating to Jannette herself, the collection is mainly California-based.
