John Marshall Budd was born November 2, 1907, in Des Moines, Iowa to Ralph and Georgia A. (Marshall) Budd. In 1927 he worked on a crew constructing the Great Northern Railway Company's Cascade Tunnel; his father was at that time president of the railroad. In 1930 he graduated from Yale University with a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering. He was employed by the Great Northern in numerous positions and locations. In June 1947 he became president of the Chicago & Eastern Illinois Railroad Company. From May 1949 to May 1951 he was Great Northern's Vice-President of Operations. He was then named president of the Great Northern and served in that capacity until March 1970, when that firm merged with the Northern Pacific, the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy, and the Spokane, Portland and Seattle railways to form the Burlington Northern Railroad Company. Budd was instrumental in planning and orchestrating the merger. He continued to serve as president of the Burlington Northern until 1972.
In addition to being involved in railroad organizations, Budd was involved in national and regional organizations of the Boy Scouts of America. He served on the boards of Marshall Field & Company, New York Life Insurance Company, St. Paul Fire and Marine Insurance Company, and International Harvester Company. He also supported Saint Paul Academy, Yale University, the Boys' Clubs of America, and the National Conference of Christians and Jews.
In 1931 Budd married Frances Bullard. During World War II he served with the 727th Railway Operating Battalion in Europe. Budd died October 25, 1979.
