BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Lydia Henshaw was born November 27, 1822 in Ellicottville, New York. She married Austin Vinton on December 30, 1844. Austin was born June 19, 1817 in Chesterfield, Massachusetts. The Vintons had two sons: Wilfred (1843-1915) and W. H. (William H., b.1847), both born in the state of New York. The Vintons farmed in Cattaraugus County, New York until moving to Minnesota in 1856 and settling in September of that year on a farm located east of Waseca in Section 36, Woodville Township. Austin died on October 24, 1891. Lydia and Wilfred and his family lived on the farm until 1896, when they moved to a house in Owatonna, Minnesota. Lydia died in 1899.
Wilfred Vinton was born December 11, 1843. He married Ada Beebee, a native of Mt. Vernon, Ohio in 1874 or 1875. They had one son, Herbert, born May 24, 1879. Wilfred, Ada, and Herbert lived with the elder Vintons and helped operate the Woodville Township farm. During the Civil War Herbert served in Company F, First Battalion Minnesota volunteers. He then spent two or three years as an instructor on an indian reservation in Dakota Territory, and some months on a large Dakota farm, before returning to the Waseca County farm. Ada died October 30, 1892. Wilfred died of tuberculosis at his home in Owatonna in December 1915.
W. H. Vinton, often referred to in the diaries as "Will" or "Willy," was born November 17, 1847. He married Emma Garver, a native of Billingsville, Ohio, on October 16, 1872. The couple had a daughter, Julia, born October 8, 1874. W. H. operated a drugstore in Owatonna.
SCOPE AND CONTENTS
Lydia Vinton's diaries give a detailed look over a twenty-year period at nineteenth century farm life from the perspective of a farm wife. Of particular interest are the diaries of Wilfred as a teenager (1858) and Herbert as an 8- and 9-year-old boy. The diaries all focus on farm work, weather conditions, and the activities of the individual diarists and of other family members. There is, unfortunately, no information about Wilfred's Civil War service nor his years in Dakota Territory, with the exception of a pencil diagram of Fort Berthold and a letter written to him on U.S. Indian Agency stationery (1878). Nor is there any information about William's years in the drugstore business.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION
| 304.E.14.6F | Lydia Vinton Diaries: | ||||||||||
| These diaries describe Lydia's life on the farm with husband Austin Vinton ("Mr. Vinton") and their extended family: son Wilfred, daughter-in-law Ada, and their son Herbert. There is also information about the activities of W. H. Vinton (Will, Willy) and his family. There is discussion about the weather, farming, Lydia's homemaking activities, and visitors and house guests; births, illnesses, and deaths in the household and among friends and family; grandson Herbert's activities; and the family's move from the farm into Owatonna. There are also frequent references to the Drum family, to whom Lydia was connected through the marriage of her sister Roxie, and occasional mention of Charles Vinton, who apparently was a relative of Austin Vinton. | |||||||||||
| March 13, 1879-December 31, 1881. | |||||||||||
| Includes references to the birth of Herbert Vinton (May 24, 1879) and to Austin Vinton's service on the township board. | |||||||||||
| January 1, 1882-April 30, 1884. | |||||||||||
| Includes a note on the last page that "Father died November 12, 1853." | |||||||||||
| May 1, 1884-September 26, 1886. | |||||||||||
| Includes a note that Lydia experienced [heart?] palpitations (Jan. 22, 1886); other such references occur in subsequent months and years. | |||||||||||
| September 27, 1886-December 22, 1888. | |||||||||||
| Includes references to "Col. Drum" and to other members of the Drum family, and to Austin Vinton's service on the township board. | |||||||||||
| December 23, 1888-July 25, 1895. | |||||||||||
| Includes references to Austin Vinton's death (Oct. 24, 1891), a cyclone in Faribault County (June 16, 1892), and Ada Vinton's death (Oct. 30, 1892). There is also frequent mention of grandson Herbert's activities. | |||||||||||
| July 26, 1895-June 7, 1899. | |||||||||||
| Includes references to an auction of the Vintons' farm equipment (March 6, 1896) and their subsequent move into Owatonna. Subsequent entries describe the Vintons' life in town. There is also a newspaper obituary for Lydia Vinton (Oct. 4, 1899). | |||||||||||
| Wilfred Vinton Diaries: | |||||||||||
| These diaries discuss the weather, farm work and chores, and the activities of family members. | |||||||||||
| February 1-April 30, 1858. | |||||||||||
| This diary was written when Wilfred was 14 years old. | |||||||||||
| April 1, 1867-February 2, 1870. | |||||||||||
| Includes a reference to the diarist's having attended the state fair at Rochester, Minnesota (October 1, 1867). There is a large gap in this diary, no entries having been made between November 4, 1868 and September 27, 1869. The second half of the diary (1869-1870) was evidently written by a different individual, possibly teenage cousin [?] Gordon Henshaw, who was then living in the household. | |||||||||||
| Herbert Vinton diary, February 4, 1888-January 8, 1889. | |||||||||||
| Written by Herbert when he was 8-9 years old. It talks about the weather, farm chores and field work, hired men, church and Sunday School, his birthday party (June 2, 1888), the election of president Benjamin Harrison (November 12, 1888), and the activities of his parents and grandparents and other relatives. | |||||||||||
| Miscellaneous papers, undated and 1856-1915. | |||||||||||
| Includes receipts for the shipment of family goods from Chicago to Winona via the Illinois Central Railroad Company (1856) and for the payment of taxes to Waseca County (1858); a pencil diagram of Fort Berthold, Dakota Territory; biographical information; and newspaper obituaries for Lydia (1899) and Wilfred Vinton (1915). | |||||||||||
