Expand/CollapseHISTORICAL NOTE

The St. Paul and Duluth Railroad Company originated with the reorganization of the Lake Superior and Mississippi (LS&M) Railroad Company. Incorporated in 1861, the predecessor LS&M was financed by Jay Cooke to create a line to connect the Twin Cities to Cooke's expanding Northern Pacific Railway. The line served as the first St. Paul to Duluth rail link, and was completed by 1870. The LS&M, however, fell into receivership following the Panic of 1873, and its reorganization created the St. Paul and Duluth Railroad Company in 1877. The railroad operated between Duluth and St. Paul Paul, Minnesota, and included branch routes to Minneapolis, Taylor Falls, Kettle River, and Cloquet, Minnesota, and Grantsburg and Superior, Wisconsin.

On June 15, 1900, the Northern Pacific Railway acquired the St. Paul and Duluth Railroad Company for $2,795,824, and its route became a branch line of Northern Pacific's transcontinental railway network.

The Northern Pacific merged with three other railroads in 1970 to form Burlington Northern, and the Duluth to St. Paul route fell under this newly formed company. With this merger, much of the original line was abandoned, due to redundancy of similar St. Paul to Duluth routes, and much of the original line was later converted into recreational rail trails.

Processing Information:

The box numbering sequence of the collection is not consistent due to deaccessioning of the contents of boxes 3-16, and assignment of new box locators of the Chief Engineer's subject files. As a consequence, the majority of the collection includes a numbering sequence of boxes 1-61, with boxes 3-16 ommitted. The subject files of the Chief Engineer are arranged separately in the numbering sequence of boxes 1-8.
