Expand/CollapseBIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Stephen Harris Harrington (1904-1995) was born in Pennsylvania and raised in Tennessee. He attended Tennessee Industrial School and after graduation became a printer’s apprentice. He worked in the printing industry throughout the 1920s-1930s and became involved in printing cards and other items needed by Democratic Party members in Tennessee. One of his contacts gained through printing was Joe Carr, a rising Democratic Party member. Carr proposed Harrington take over as president of the Young Democrats of America (YDA) when Carr resigned from said position in the late 1930s to become Secretary of the State of Tennessee. Harrington accepted and with this additional position made valuable connections with Party members in Washington and across the country. He attained a position with the Printing and Publishing Division of the War Production Board upon the United States entrance into WWII soon after. He maintained his association with the War Production Board when he was hired as an assistant to Charles Ward, president of Brown & Bigelow (B&B), and moved to Saint Paul (Minn.) in 1943. In 1948, Harrington served as the finance chairman for the Truman-Barkley Club, and attended Harry Truman's and Alben Barkley's inauguration. Harrington resigned his position with Brown & Bigelow (B&B) soon after the death of Ward in 1959.

Stephen Harrington married Martha Boylin in 1931 and they had two children. Martha died while the Harrington’s were living in Florida in 1984. Stephen moved back to Minnesota in 1992 and died from complications of Alzheimers in 1995.
