Expand/CollapseHISTORICAL NOTE

The Minnesota Waterfowl Association (MWA) at first was founded in Albert Lea, Minnesota in 1967. Originally known as the Southern Minnesota Lake Improvement Association, the organization sought to preserve disappearing and deteriorating lake, river, and marsh habitat for waterfowl. The organization later expanded statewide, and developed education and fundraising programs, led waterfowl conservation projects, and lobbied the Minnesota State Legislature for conservation funding and environmental regulation protections of waterfowl habitat. Two key lobbying efforts included helping to establish the Minnesota State Waterfowl Stamp Program (1977) and the Minnesota Wetlands Heritage Act (1991). The organization also obtained State financing through the Legislative Commission of Minnesota Resources (LCMR), helping to fund numerous conservation projects statewide. In total, the organization led over 600 conservation projects in 50 Minnesota Counties during their 52 year history. In September 2019, MWA dissolved due to declining membership, dwindling fundraising, and loss of revenue.
