Expand/CollapseHISTORICAL NOTE

In 1957, the Morgan May family estate sold their lands in Washington County, Minnesota to the Amherst Wilder Foundation. The Foundation and the Science Museum soon after developed the site for environmental science and nature programming, and began hosting summer programs and school groups in the mid 1960s.

The site was purchased by the Lee and Rose Warner Foundation, and renamed the Lee and Rose Warner Nature Center in 1970. The Foundation later merged with the Manitou Fund, which was operated by former Minnesota Vikings owner Donald McNeely. The merged foundation continued their partnership with the Minnesota Science Museum, and expanded the Center's acreage and programming. In total, the site encompassed 1,400 acres of prairies, forest, wetlands, bogs, and lakes, including the Warner and Wilder Woods, Terrapin Lake, and May Lake.

In late 2019, the Manitou Fund ended its long-term partnership with the Science Museum of Minnesota, and closed the Lee and Rose Warner Nature Center.
