BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Wheelock Whitney Jr. was born in St. Cloud, Minnesota on July 30, 1926 to parents Wheelock and Katharine Whitney. Whitney attended Phillips Academy and joined the U.S. Navy after his graduation in 1944. After his military service, he attended Yale University and graduated in 1950.
Whitney first pursued a career as an investment banker, becoming the CEO of J.M. Dain and Co., and was elected president of the Investment Bankers Association of America (1963 to 1972). In the 1960s, Whitney also spearheaded efforts to bring major league franchises of the Minnesota Twins and North Stars to the state and served in ownership and sports executive roles for both franchises. He also served as part owner of the Minnesota Vikings in the 1980s.
Post banking career, Whitney pursued educational and philanthropic interests, including teaching management courses at the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota and donating heavily to the Minneapolis Community and Technical College. He and his wife Irene Hixon also helped co-found the chemical dependency treatment center of the Johnson Institute, and helped create the National Council on Alcoholism and the Minnesota Council on Health. In addition, he served in leadership roles for the Minnesota Council on AIDS, InnerCity Tennis, and the Minnesota Organization on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome.
Whitney also pursued a political career, serving as the mayor of Wayzata, Minnesota (1963-1986), and ran as a Republican unsuccessfully for the U.S. Senate in 1964 and Minnesota governor in 1982.
Whitney first married Irene Hixon in 1948, and had four children together: Wheelock III; Pennell; Joseph; and Ben. Irene Hixon passed in 1986. Whitney married Penny Lewis in 1990, but divorced in 1994. He later married former Minnesota Supreme Court Justice Kathleen Blatz in 2005.
Wheelock Whitney Jr. passed away at the age of 89 in Independence, Minnesota.
