Expand/CollapseBIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Hazel Belvo was born in Centerville, Ohio in 1934. She attended the Dayton Art Institute in 1959, where she met Anishinaabe artist George Morrison. The two married in 1960, and had a son, Briand Mesaba, in 1961. In the same period, they moved to New York City, where Belvo attended The New School for Social Research. From 1964-1970, Belvo taught and lectured at the Lincoln School and the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, Rhode Island, and also worked as a Mary Ingraham Bunting Institute Scholar at Radcliffe College in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Hazel Belvo and George Morrison moved to Minnesota in 1970, where she taught and served as head of the St. Paul Academy and Summit School (1972-1989), and co-founded the feminist art collective of the Women's Art Registry of Minnesota (WARM). In this period, Belvo also obtained a bachelor of arts from the University of Minnesota (1980) and masters of fine arts from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design (1980).

In the mid 1970s, Belvo and Morrison established Red Rock, their home and artist studio near Grand Portage, Minnesota. Belvo also spent summers in this region as an artist-in-residence, teacher, and mentor at the Grand Marais Art Colony in Grand Marais, Minnesota, a role she would continue for most of her career.

In the late 1980s, Belvo was hired as a professor at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design (MCAD), eventually serving as the Chair and Dean of Fine Arts in her 34 year career.

In addition to teaching, Belvo's career included extensive art exhibitions, both public and private. Some institutions featuring her work include the Minnesota Museum of American Art, Weisman Art Museum, Minneapolis College of Art and Design, Tweed Museum of Art, Minneapolis Institute of Art, General Mills, the Minnesota Historical Society, and Walker Art Center. Belvo's artwork focuses on themes of nature, spirituality, and feminism. She is best known for her art pieces regarding the Witch Tree or Little Cedar Spirit Tree of northern Minnesota.

Hazel Belvo and George Morrison divorced in 1993, but continued their friendship. George passed at his home Red Rock in 2000. Hazel Belvo lives in Minneapolis and Grand Marais, Minnesota, and shares her home and studio with artist Marcia Cushmore.
