Expand/CollapseSCOPE AND CONTENTS

Humphrey's correspondence reflecting a variety of public contacts, friendly letters, acknowledgments, congratulations, responses to constituent requests, and quasi-official social activities, as well as comments on current issues and on Humphrey's positions and actions as Senator, and some information on the management of his senatorial office. Individual correspondent files generally are for either special friends or compulsive letter-writers. These files are extant only for 1949-1957 and 1963-1964. Except for a few 1958-1961 office management files (Box 22), no similar files for the intervening period were received from the Humphrey office. Some of the correspondence is that of his legislative counsel Max Kampelman (to approximately 1956) and of administrative assistant Herbert J. Waters (after approximately 1954). A few Health Subcommittee and campaign materials are included in the 1963-1964 files.

Constituent requests are for such things as Agriculture Department yearbooks, autographs and photographs, federal government documents, Senate passes, items to sell at fund-raisers, and to be placed on the mailing list for Humphrey's newsletter. Because of their volume and repetitiveness, they were retained only selectively: for 1949-1951, during which they were sparse; and in their entirety for 1952 and 1954, to illustrate the range of requests and the nature of the Humphrey office's response. They progressively diminished in quantity in this series beginning in 1956. Newsletter mailing list files were retained where they contained a high proportion of commentary on the newsletter or on Humphrey.

Public relations files were present in quantity only for 1955-1957 and 1963-1964. Those for 1955-1957 were sampled in varying ratios, as noted on the file list; those for 1963 were retained; those for 1964 were disposed of. They consist largely of congratulations – for baby births, weddings, anniversaries, scholastic achievement, and attention in local newspapers for a variety of civic and commercial activities or accomplishments – but also include condolences, thanks for materials sent to the Humphrey office, and general friendly messages. It should be noted that the general files in this series include additional public relations and request correspondence.
