Since this was a state election, the campaign files deal primarily with Minnesota issues, strategies, constituents, and political organizations and personages. They include correspondence, memoranda, telegrams, congratulatory and thank-you letters, press releases, clippings, speeches, mailing lists, background information, and similar materials. There is information on state political organization and candidates, the various Humphrey volunteer committees, Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party politics; campaign headquarters activities, Humphrey’s positions on issues, media strategies and relations, and the political configuration of Minnesota and its counties.

Note to Researchers: The 1970 campaign files were originally in considerable disarray, and there was much duplication of file series as well as of individual items. An overall organization was imposed upon the files during preliminary processing, in which an attempt was made to correlate related files and eliminate duplication while retaining those elements of file structure that had originally been established by the campaign staff. Nevertheless, materials within the various file series remain somewhat duplicative, and some segments of materials are apparently incomplete. Most of these materials have not been examined or assessed in detail.

A variety of files on the general organization and conduct of Humphrey’s 1970 senatorial campaign, and on the political activity collateral to it. They include correspondence, memoranda, telegrams, congratulatory and thank-you letters, news releases, clippings, mailing lists, printed materials, and songs. They focus on general and friendly correspondence and public contacts; state political organization, candidates, and other personages; campaign literature and its production; information on the various Humphrey volunteer committees; Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party politics in general and the state convention; and campaign headquarters organization, activities, and staff.

These files consist of newsletters, statements, and platforms put forth by the Democratic National Committee (DNC); files pertaining to the Democratic Policy Council, of which Humphrey was chairman; files on other committee reports; a printed Democratic Fact Book on major issues of the 1970 congressional campaigns; information pertaining to the 1970 and 1972 DNC national conventions; and state fact sheets containing biographical information on each state’s United States senators and representatives, along with demographic data on the state’s political organizations and milieu.

In three sections: History, Positions, and Debates. The History section contains short summaries of biographical and personal material relating to Humphrey’s career. The Positions section contains statements of Humphrey’s positions on the various critical issues of the 1970 campaign. These are followed by notes and comments used in campaign debates on October 1- 5, 1970, in Alexandria, Duluth, and the Twin Cities.

Names and addresses of Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party officers, delegates, and alternates to the 1968 Democratic National Convention, and of delegates and alternates to the 1968 and 1970 Democratic state conventions. Each county file consists of pages that may include an index, current and/or general information (on politics, demographics, economics), statistics, names of county officers, DFL party organization, media, and cities or towns. The pages were originally filed in loose-leaf notebooks, also entitled county books. Files for Aitkin, Anoka, Carlton, Carver, and Polk counties are missing.

The research files contain background materials and clippings files on individuals and issues, both state and national, that were of prime importance to Humphrey and his staff during the 1970 campaign. They also include a compilation of Clark MacGregor’s congressional voting records and statements. In two sections: Subject Files (2 boxes) and Clippings (3 boxes), each arranged by topic. Includes an index (in Box 13).
