The clippings files consist largely of newspaper articles, with some news magazine articles intermingled, in which Humphrey's name is mentioned. Most of the articles concern Humphrey directly. Others pertain to issues or events in which he participated, and in a few he is mentioned only in passing.

General arrangement of the clippings is chronological. Most of the clippings are foldered by month. Some clippings for 1946-1952 and 1966-1967 are arranged by subject; some for 1966- 1967 are arranged by state; and a few other topical files are scattered throughout. Clippings for 1971-1978 are arranged by month, with each month then divided into three groups: Minnesota, Washington, and Other (sometimes labeled National). Clippings for 1965-1968 are labeled with the Vice Presidential office code number PRL 9.2.
