Correspondence, legal and personal documents of various sorts, financial records, printed materials, cards, awards and other memorabilia, newspaper and magazine clippings, sound and visual materials, and other materials pertaining to the personal and private lives and activities of Hubert Humphrey, Muriel Humphrey, their children, and other family members.

Although few files are directly concerned with Humphrey’s senatorial or vice presidential activities, much of the correspondence is of a political nature or is conducted with political associates and with organizations active in public affairs. Also included are family letters; genealogical materials; files on income taxes, real property including the Humphrey homes, investments, and contributions; greeting cards and letters; photographs and audiocassettes; files on gifts received and sent; well-wishes during his various illnesses and hospitalizations; files on organizations and events of which Humphrey was a member or sponsor; and a variety of awards, tributes, commendations, honorary degrees, and other personal memorabilia.

There are also some files of the Humphrey Family Advisory Committee (1978-1982), including minutes and related papers and files on tributes and memorial activities; correspondence, minutes, financial reports, and miscellany stemming from Humphrey’s service on the Encyclopedia Britannica board of directors (1969-1970); files on the education institutions (Macalester College and the University of Minnesota) with which he was involved, especially during 1969-1970; and files on the creation and endowment of the Humphrey Institute at the University of Minnesota.

The remainder is only partially organized, and materials of a given sort or pertaining to a given topic may be found scattered throughout.
