HISTORICAL NOTE
The Minnesota Academy of Natural Sciences was organized on January 6, 1873. It was formed by Dr. Asa Emery Johnson and led by University of Minnesota geology professor Newton H. Winchell. In 1910, it was renamed the Minnesota Academy of Science. Following Winchell's death in 1914, the organization went into decline and was dissolved in 1929, but later reorganized in November 1932.
The organization became an affiliate of American Association for the Advancement of Science in October 1933. They later sponsored the high school science and mathematics program Junior Academy of Science in 1936. Starting in 1950, the organization also sponsored Regional Science Fairs and the Junior Academy State Science Fair in cooperation with other scientific organizations within Minnesota.
In 1968, the organization held its first Tri-State Junior Science & Humanities Symposium in partnership with the U.S. Army, and in the same period established the Winchell Undergraduate Research Symposium.
In 1994, the organization established the Minnesota Science Bowl as a regional event for the United States Department of Energy sponsored National Science Bowl.
SCOPE AND CONTENTS
Beyond routine administrative matters the collection documents the Academy's Job Corps Mathematics Project (1965-1970), science fairs, symposiums, high school mathematics contests, science teacher institutes, and the Menage Expedition to study tropical birds in the Philippines (1890-1930).
