HUBERT H. HUMPHREY:

Humphrey's campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1972 was unsuccessful. Nevertheless, in the months prior to the convention he did maintain a full-scale campaign office and staff, and a nation-wide campaign was conducted.

The files are divided into three main subgroups: campaign administration, special groups, and research files. Campaign administration files concern not only the actual operations of the campaign office, but also political strategy and planning. Information about the Democratic National Convention is included within the administrative files.

The special groups files pertain to particular groups organized in support of Humphrey, as well as special interest groups, such as minorities and labor, toward whom the Humphrey campaign was directed.

Research files include background materials on issues as well as considerable information about Humphrey's most prominent opponents, George McGovern and Richard Nixon.

Much of the administrative materials originated from Humphrey's local office or in the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party offices. Certain files, particularly the youth file in special groups and the political operations strategy file, focus on Minnesota activities.
