BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Lance Sherman Belville was born in Winona,
Minnesota on June 19, 1935 to parents Lloyd and Grace Belville. Belville went to
Winona High School, and later attended the University of Southern California on a
debate scholarship, and graduated with a degree in Cinema in 1957.
Following his studies, Belville served four years in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Fleet as a public information officer. During his service, he was stationed in Singapore, Japan, the Arctic, and New York City.
Belville pursued a career in journalism following his military service, working as a foreign correspondent in Berlin for a year, and then Rio de Janeiro for the United Press International (UPI) and the ABC News network. In Brazil, he covered the 1964 military coup d'état, and repression and torture committed by the military dictatorship. In his free time, Belville developed screenplays based on his experiences in Brazil. His reporting and plays received censorship from the military regime, and with the growing dangers of reporting in the country, the ABC network pulled him from Brazil in 1971.
Belville returned to New York City, and worked as playwright, where he produced five off and off-off-Broadway plays, before his eventual return to Minnesota in 1977.
In Minnesota, Belville received the National Endowment for the Arts fellowship and served as a resident of the Playwrights' Center in Minneapolis. In 1978, Belville co-founded the Great American History Theatre (now History Theatre) in St. Paul, Minnesota with his wife Lynn Lohr, serving as the theatre's first playwright-in-residence and eventual co-artistic director with Lohr. In his tenure, Belville helped acquire and renovate the Crawford Livingston Theatre, and produced numerous acclaimed plays, including "Nina! Madam to a Saintly City," "Scott and Zelda: the Beautiful Fools," "Plain Hearts," and many others. He also wrote scripts for two documentaries produced by Ukrainian film director Slavko Nowytski.
In 1994, Belville left the History Theatre, and relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area. There he continued to write and produce plays, including "Queen Clara," Qaddafi's Cook," and "Atlanta Burning, Sherman's Shadows," which were produced nationally. In this same period, Belville also utilized his multilingual skillset and the medium of theater to teach English as a Second Language courses in California, Brazil, and Nicaragua, and continued to produce translations of playscripts and other works.
In his career, Belville wrote and produced over fifty plays, which have been performed in numerous productions nationally and in Mexico, Brazil, and the United Kingdom.
Lance Belville died of congestive heart failure at his home in Sausalito, California on March 14, 2020.
SCOPE AND CONTENTS
The collection includes the various drafts, rehearsal copies, and master versions of the plays Belville wrote and produced during his career, including his plays from his college years and the U.S. Navy (1950s), his time in Brazil and New York (early 1960s-1970s), his lengthy tenure at the Great American History Theatre and History Theatre (1978-1993), and his years living in California (1990s-2010s). Some audio recordings of interviews and performances are also included with the various playscripts. Various book manuscripts he authored or help translate are also available.
The papers also contain Belville's early creative writings and poems (1950s); his written press releases when he served in the Navy (1950s); and published articles from his time as a journalist in Brazil (1960s). Also included are research files, notes, writers workshop files, project files, and files related to translation work and English as Second Language (ESL) teaching. Personal and business correspondence, photographs, and memorabilia are interfiled among the playscripts and book manuscripts, as well as publicity, clippings, and press materials for various play productions.
Additionally, audio recordings are included of Lance Belville's radio spots while he was a journalist in Brazil. This includes interviews and reports Belville produced for "Perspective Radio News" of the ABC network. Much of the reporting covers topics of government repression and arrests, student protests, indigenous communities, hippies, poverty, and interviews with groups and individuals opposed to the Brazilian dictatorship (1960s-1971).
The bulk of audio and video recordings are of plays and performances produced by the Great American History Theatre/History Theatre, and from productions after Belville left the theater (1979-2000s). This includes: performance recordings produced by the theater; radio performances; musical performances, including demos and select sampling of musical performances; Q & A sessions; and interviews of Lance Belville, Lynn Lohr, performers, and other collaborators by local media for publicity purposes. Video recordings also include episodes of "St. Paul Scene," the local television show Lance Belville hosted, which covered local theater and the arts (1994), and a short promotional video for FairTradeUSA, for which the script was written by Belville, and also narrated and translated by him (approximately 2009).
Lastly, the papers include a compilation of digital video recordings of some of Lance Belville's final plays, including "Qaddafi's Cook," "Atlanta Burning, Sherman's Shadows," and a revisit of "Scott and Zelda: the Beautiful Fools" which were performed just prior to or after Lance Belville's passing in March 2020. Virtual meeting video recordings of the "Cowboy and the Widow" (March 21, 2021) are also included, which was dedicated to Belville and included readings by his wife Lynn Lohr, and family and friends. A video, slide show, and digital photographs compiled and prepared for his celebration of life are also included.
