HISTORICAL NOTE
The Policy Office was long-headed by Program Director Mark Schultz, and appears to have operated out of his home in South Minneapolis for many years. The office was sometimes called the "Policy Outpost." The office included Program Organizer Mike McMahon and several other organizers, and some interns. In later years Amanda Koehler served as manager of the "Policy Department."
The Policy Office was concerned with organizing and educating farmers and others, with federal and state farm-related legislation, farm sustainability, factory farms, farmer retirements and issues surrounding passing on the farm to the next generation or selling it to a beginning farmer, and with the so-called pork checkoff. It was also concerned with erosion problems resulting from insurance company investments in farmland and their lack of care of the land, massive dairy operations and their attendant pollution problems, and with various farm and agriculture-related programs and with a variety of other policy issues.

Mark Schultz became Organizer and Policy Program Director in 1991. He was sometimes styled "Program Director" and "Policy and Organizing Program Director." Schultz succeeded George Boody as Land Stewardship Project executive director in 2017.
