HISTORICAL NOTE
The Winton company records consist of the business records of a privately-owned lumber company operated by three generations of the Charles J. Winton family, and its affiliated and subsidiary companies. The Wintons had financial interests in lumber companies in Minnesota, Montana, Idaho, California, Oregon and Canada. They were also principal stockholders of several oil companies in the southwestern United States and in Canada, which were supervised through the Minneapolis office but run locally.
Charles Joel (C.J.) Winton came to Wausau, Wisconsin from Addison, New York, in 1883. In 1899 he and his brother David Nelson (D.N.) Winton, bought the Thief River Falls (Minnesota) Lumber Company. From Minnesota their operations spread to Idaho and California where their holdings, bought from the Oregon and California Railroad in the early 1900s, formed the basis of the Winton Timber Company. This company was succeeded in 1925 by the Winton Oregon Timber Company, which conducted the actual logging operations on these lands. In 1923 the Winton Lumber Company was incorporated to conduct their Idaho milling and logging operations. In the early 1920s, the Wintons started their Canadian operations with Eagle Lake Spruce Mills in Giscome, British Columbia, and The Pas Lumber Company at The Pas, Manitoba.
In addition to these main companies, the Wintons also owned or were associated with many smaller forest products companies and affiliated interests.
After the death of D.N. Winton in 1930 and of C.J. Winton, Sr., in 1934, the company was operated as a partnership by Charles Joel Winton Jr., his brother David Judson Winton, and their cousins John Norton Winton and Robert Craine Winton. The third generation includes David Michael Winton and Charles Joel Winton III.
SCOPE AND CONTENTS
Minneapolis office files give an overview of headquarters operations, tie together the various Winton activities and branch offices, and illustrate their relationship with other lumber and wood-using companies that were not Winton subsidiaries. The files also contain data on the family's investments and finances, and on their participation in Minneapolis civic, cultural, social, and political life. Primary correspondents are Charles J. Winton and his brother David Nelson Winton, C.J.'s sons David Judson and Charles J., Jr., Ben and Walter Alexander, Walter Bissell, D. Clark Everest, Walter Rosenberry, and Hubert J. Forester.
The five main Winton companies represented in the collection are the Winton Lumber Company, which operated primarily in Martell, California; the Winton Timber Company (Ore.) and its successor, the Winton Oregon Timber Company; the Eagle Lake Spruce Mills (B.C., Canada); and The Pas Lumber Company of The Pas, Manitoba, and later Prince George, British Columbia. Their records document purchase, valuation, and logging of pine lands in Oregon, Idaho, northern California, British Columbia, and Manitoba; sale of logs and lumber; taxation and finances; logging contracts and timber exchanges with other companies; operation of logging camps; forest management and yields; personnel management and worker benefits, especially by The Pas Lumber Company; state and federal regulations concerning lumbering operations in the U.S. and Canada; and the Tillamook fire (1933) in Oregon and subsequent salvage operations by the Wintons and others, especially through the Trask-Wilson Committee.
The collection further contains records of 30 other Winton-owned or Winton-operated companies, files on Sustained Yield forestry, files on tariffs on imported lumber, and files relating to 12 miscellaneous lumber, timber, railroad, paper, and other companies.

WINTON TIMBER COMPANY
The Winton Timber Company was incorporated in Wisconsin in 1901 as a general logging and lumbering firm by Charles J. Winton, Judson M. Smith, and Charles S. Gilbert. The company later received licenses to operate in Oregon (1903), California (1911), and Minnesota (1913). In 1901 the company acquired a 23,000 acre timber tract in Oregon from the Oregon and California Railroad Company and acquired several more Oregon and California tracts over the next two years, boosting its acreage to 39,500,000. The company existed until December 1925, operating largely in Oregon and California. At that time it was formally dissolved and all its assets, properties, and liabilities were transferred to the newly-created Winton Oregon Timber Company, a Delaware corporation.

WINTON OREGON TIMBER COMPANY
The Winton Oregon Timber Company was incorporated in 1925 in Delaware, its object being the assumption of all the assets, properties, and liabilities of the Winton Timber Company. The change was made to eliminate the Wisconsin income and inheritance tax obligations of the Winton Timber Company. The company was capitalized at $500,000 and was authorized to carry on the same general timber land management, logging, and lumbering activities as its predecessor. It managed its western lands throughout the 1920s and 1930s although 300,000 acres were destroyed in the Tillamook fire of August 1933. The company's activities slowed in the 1940s and it was dissolved in 1947, after selling off its last remaining timber tracts.

Eagle Lake Spruce Mills, Limited, was incorporated by David N. Winton and Charles J. Winton in 1923, under the 1921 Companies Act of British Columbia, to acquire the properties and operations of the Giscome Lumber Company at Giscome, British Columbia. It was capitalized at $600,000 and was licensed to engage in the general logging and lumbering business. Its capital increased periodically, reaching $1,300,000 in 1928. The company carried on a general logging and milling business in the spruce-rich Giscome area until September 1932 when it was sold to Donald Sellers McPhee (Sinclair Mills, British Columbia) and Albert Roy Spurr (Prince George, British Columbia) who organized the firm of Eagle Lake Sawmills, Limited to take over the properties and operations. The company maintained an inactive existence until 1939, in which year Eagle Lake Sawmills, Limited purchased the 50,000 shares of its own stock theretofore owned by Eagle Lake Spruce Mills, Limited, at a price of $40,000.

THE PAS LUMBER COMPANY
The Pas Lumber Company, Ltd., was incorporated in 1919 to take over the properties of the Finger Lumber Company, Ltd., purchased that year by the Wintons. Property consisted of small White Spruce timber in Saskatchewan and a large mill complex at The Pas (west central Manitoba) on the Saskatchewan River. In 1938 the company built a second mill complex at Reserve, Saskatchewan, 100 miles southwest of The Pas. In 1954 the company acquired a small planing mill in Prince George, British Columbia, which they used to plane green lumber purchased from local sawmills. In about 1957 they expanded the British Columbia operations, constructing a sawmill and acquiring timber licenses near the Parsnip River (about 80 miles north of Prince George). In 1958 the company's Manitoba and Saskatchewan operations were liquidated - timber resources in those provinces were fast dwindling - and the British Columbia operations became the sole lumbering and logging interests of the company.

It was a feeder line about 14 miles long connecting with the Southern Pacific Railroad, running between Markell and Ione (Amador County), California. The Winton Lumber Company entered into an agreement with the Southern Pacific Railroad and the Amador Central Railroad in 1941 whereby Winton and the Southern Pacific jointly loaned the Amador money to refurbish its tracks to enable it to carry Winton lumber. | Amador Lumber Company: | |||||||||||||
| The Amador Lumber Company (a Delaware corporation) was incorporated by Winton interests in 1941 to acquire timber property and establish a logging and lumbering operation in Amador County, California. The Winton Idaho properties were at the time facing depletion, and the company turned to California seeking new timber resources. It acquired about 20,000 acres of Sugar and Ponderosa Pine timber in Amador County (in the Sierra Nevada foothills) from the Amador Timber Company, and built a mill complex at Martell. In 1942 it also acquired about 12,000 acres of pine stumpage in the Forest Blue Creek area in adjoining Calaveras County from other lumber interests there. In December 1942 the Amador Lumber Company was merged into the Winton Lumber Company and its corporate existence thereupon ceased. | |||||||||||||

| Calaveras timber: | |||||||||||||
| In 1942 the Winton Lumber Company entered a joint timber cutting agreement with the Calaveras Land and Timber Corporation (Grand Rapids, Michigan), whereby the Winton Company would exchange cash and other assets for a joint interest in the Calaveras Corporation's extensive pine, spruce, cedar, and fir stumpage in the northern part of Calaveras County (California). The Michigan company did not have the financial resources to operate the properties itself. The relationship persisted through about 1962. Many of the contracts to this timber operated by the Winton Lumber Company were initially negotiated by the Amador Lumber Company, which was merged into the Winton Lumber Company at the end of 1932. | |||||||||||||
| The primary correspondents are F.J. Solinsky, Jr., F.J. Solinsky III, and James Rowland Lowe (president of Calaveras Land and Timber Corporation). | Siskiyou-Minnesota Timber Company: | |||||||||||||
| The Siskiyou-Minnesota Timber Company was organized as a Delaware corporation in 1929 to take title to about 7,000 areas of Sugar Pine lands that were owned individually by the shareholders of Winton Oregon Timber Company (formerly Winton Timber Company). These lands in Siskiyou County, California had been deeded to the shareholders in 1912 by the Winton Timber Company to circumvent prevailing California tax laws. The shareholders were given pro rata shares in the Siskiyou-Minnesota company which simply held the lands until they could be sold. The company sold the remaining acreage to the Long-Bell Lumber Company (Missouri) and went into liquidation in 1944. | |||||||||||||

| Sustained Yield: | |||||||||||||
| Sustained Yield was a plan conceived by David T. Winton in 1927. It sought to sustain permanent forest industries and to stabilize the economies of the dependent communities. This was a cooperative plan between the U.S. Forest Service and private companies which required the companies to cut their own timber at a rate that would keep the forest productive. In turn, the companies were assured that they could buy National Forest timber at a fair price. The Cooperative Sustained-Yield Unit Agreements with Forest Owners and Operators (S.250), the formalization of the proposal, became law in 1944. The Wintons were interested in a sustained yield plan for their Martell, California, operation. | |||||||||||||
