Expand/CollapseHISTORICAL NOTE

The Arts Development Associates (ADA) was founded by former Guthrie Theater public relations and audience development directors Bradley G. Morison and Kay Fliehr in January 1967. Originally called Morison and Fliehr Associates, the business grew out of their audience development work at the Guthrie Theater, which was documented in their co-authored book In Search of an audience: how an audience was found for the Tyrone Guthrie Theatre (1968). When founded, it was the first arts consulting development firm in the United States. Located in Minneapolis, the firm initially focused on audience development, but evolved to also focus on long-range planning, facility feasibility analysis, and program development.

In the early 1970s, the firm also maintained an office in New York City. Early consultants included Joseph W. Ziegler, Kathleen Ann Cherry, Patricia Ann Mitchell, and Robert Crawford.

In 1985, Julie Gordon Dalgleish joined the firm as vice president, and soon after co-authored the book Waiting in the Wings: a larger audience for the arts and how to develop it (1987) with Bradley Morison, which proved to be a highly influential text in the area of audience development for theaters and other cultural organizations. The partnership between the two continued until Morison stepped down from the firm in the early 2000s. Dalgleish continued her work with the firm in various leadership roles following Morison's departure, including president of ADA.

Arts Development Associates (ADA) served a clientèle base throughout the United States, as well as clients in the UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Some of their notable client institutions included the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, the San Francisco Opera, the Old Tote Theatre Company (Australia), the Royal New Zealand Ballet, Artpark (Buffalo, New York), the Herberger Theater Center (Phoenix, Arizona), the Kansas City Symphony, the Illusion Theater (Minneapolis, Minnesota), and the Guthrie Theater.

In 2008, the firm's original founder Bradley G. Morison passed at the age of 83 in Minneapolis.
