Expand/CollapseHISTORICAL NOTE

The African American Registry was founded by Benjamin Mchie in 1999. In its initial years, the Registry included a printed and online calendar with daily entries of accomplishments and short historical biographies of African Americans. The Registry expanded to serve as an on-line research database focused on African American heritage. In addition to the database, the Registry focuses on: classroom curriculum and workshops through its Teacher's Forum services; documenting personal narratives of African American elders, professionals, and youth through its Voices That Guide Us media services; and various youth programs, such as the Street Team, which promotes cross-cultural and cross-generational recorded and public dialogue between youth and elders.

The founder Benjamin Mchie was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota to parents Beneta Edwards Mchie and John Mchie, Sr. on September 5, 1948. Mchie attended Minneapolis Central High School and later received a bachelor's degree in speech communication from California State University. Prior to creating the African American Registry, Mchie pursued a career in media, first working as a radio announcer for various stations, including hosting the weekly program RAP (Radio and People) on KQRS, and working as an independent camera operator for local television stations, ESPN, and other clients.
