Expand/CollapseHISTORICAL NOTE

Water is Life! The Freshwater Society is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving freshwater resources and their surrounding watersheds. Originally known as the Freshwater Biological Research Foundation, the organization's Board was first chaired by Dick Gray (Richard G. Gray, Jr.), a prolific writer on topics related to Lake Minnetonka. In 1974 the Freshwater Foundation moved its offices into the new 52,000 square-foot, multi-million-dollar Freshwater Biological Institute building it constructed at Navarre on Lake Minnetonka.

On December 9, 1976, the Freshwater Foundation officially gave the land, building, and equipment to the University of Minnesota. At a later date, the University renamed the facility the Gray Freshwater Biological Institute. Later, with the Freshwater Biological Institute up and running, it was decided that the nonprofit entity that organized the project should be renamed the Freshwater Society.

In October 1995 the University, facing budget troubles of its own, returned the facility to the Freshwater Society. The Freshwater Society accepted the building back, renamed Gray Freshwater Center. The Society's offices were later moved to Saint Paul.

In 2005, Freshwater began re imagining its mission. The resulting "Water is Life" report identified groundwater protection and nonpoint pollution as key issues for the future. In 2021 its main focus was nonpoint pollution and groundwater in Minnesota and the Upper Midwest, and the organization worked to ensure the sustainability of groundwater, prevent polluted runoff from harming lakes and rivers, and helped citizens and community leaders advocate for healthy water.
