Shannon Morton Robinson, son of George and Drusilla Robinson, was born in Prospect, Pennsylvania, September 17, 1843. The family moved to Minneapolis in 1857. On June 6, 1861 Mort enlisted in Company D, of the First Minnesota Regiment, as the company’s drummer boy. He participated in the first Battle of Bull Run (July 21, 1861), after which he became sick with a series of maladies and was sent home to the Fort Snelling hospital. He was also wounded at the Battle of Antietam.
At some point Robinson re-enlisted with the Sixth Minnesota Infantry Regiment.
Robinson was discharged on May 5, 1864. After discharge he was employed by the U.S. Sanitary Commission at Cliffburne Barracks Hospital (Washington, D.C.). He died July 22, 1864 in Washington, D.C., and is buried at Arlington National Cemetery. He left behind in Minneapolis his mother, Drusilla Robinson (1814-1893), who in 1879 married Isaac Lorenzo Lincoln(1818-1894).
Robinson was also known as Mort Robinson. Some sources erroneously give his name as Mortimer Robinson.
Seth L. Hammon was born in Stetson, Penobscot County, Maine in 1835. On April 29, 1861 he was mustered into Company D of the First Minnesota Regiment. He suffered injuries in the First Battle of Bull Run and returned to Minnesota for recovery. He remained in Minnesota recruiting volunteers and assisting at Fort Snelling. Although discharged for disability in September 1862, he continued duty at Fort Snelling where he assumed command of the Recruiting Rendezvous, a soldier-led effort to recruit enlistees. On June 24, 1863 he received a commission in the Veterans Reserve Corps. On March 26, 1866 he was appointed Second Lieutenant in the 12th U.S. Infantry, serving until August 15, 1867. Hammon married Augusta "Gussie" Robinson (1837-1914), an older sister of S. Morton Robinson, on June 6, 1862 in Minneapolis. He died February 6, 1892 in Minneapolis, and is buried at Lakewood Cemetery.
