BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Gary M. DeCramer was born September 13, 1944 at Marshall, Minnesota, and grew up on a farm near the historically Dutch-American community of Ghent. He was of Dutch ancestry.
In the state senate his special concerns included agriculture; soil, water, and wildlife conservation; education; and transportation. In addition, he taught at the Hubert H. Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs, Metropolitan State University, and at Southwest State University (Marshall, Minn.). He also served briefly as interim president of Southwest State University (1991-1992).
DeCramer held a Bachelor's degree in English and American literature from the College of St. Thomas (Saint Paul), a Master's degree in English and American literature from the University of Oklahoma, and a doctorate in Education from the University of St. Thomas (St. Paul).
He was married to Patricia O'Brien in May 1967, and to Estelle Brouwer in May 1988. He had a daughter Leila Mary with Patricia, and daughters Catherine Estelle and Louise Claire with Estelle. Brought up a Roman Catholic, he eventually joined Unity Church-Unitarian in Saint Paul. DeCramer died suddenly March 7, 2012 and is buried at Oakland Cemetery in Saint Paul.
SCOPE AND CONTENTS
The collection reflects a rich and varied life of many activities and experiences.
DeCramer's senatorial files date heavily from his final term in office (1991-1992) and relate in large part to educational and transportation issues. A number of files concern DeCramer's activities with the Atlantic and Pacific Exchange Program, which involved cooperation with Dutch partners on agricultural issues. Campaign files document his several successful campaigns for state senate.
Academic materials relate especially to DeCramer's doctoral studies at the University of St. Thomas. This series also contains materials documenting his studies of the Apache Tribe of Oklahoma while at the University of Oklahoma. There are course materials from his teaching positions, and material from various involvements with the Hubert H. Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs at the University of Minnesota.
