MINNESOTA ACADEMY OF MEDICINE:

The Minnesota Academy of Medicine was founded in October 1887 with a group of doctors from Minneapolis and St. Paul. Advances in antiseptic surgery, including new practices introduced to Minnesota in the 1880s, prompted the formation of the organization to help advance medical knowledge in this area. The original mission of the organization stated, "for the purpose of professional research and for the association of medical men upon a basis of good fellowship, professional ability, and literary merit." Dr. John F. Fulton served as its first president and Amos Abbot as its vice president.

The members of the Academy were among the founding faculty of the College of Medicine and Surgery at the University of Minnesota established in 1888. In the same year, the Academy amended its constitution to include members from Greater Minnesota. Shortly after, William J. Mayo and Charles H. Mayo became associate members of the organization, cementing strong ties with the Mayo Clinic and doctors from the Rochester, Minnesota area. In 1928, the organization again revised its constitution to include members of the University of Minnesota medical faculty.

In its formative years, the Academy held monthly meetings at the West Hotel in Minneapolis or Hotel Ryan in St. Paul. After 1900, the organization began to meet at the Minneapolis Club or Minnesota Club in St. Paul. In 1911, the organization settled into its permanent meeting space at the Town and Country Club located at the border of Minneapolis and St. Paul.

The Academy meets eight times a year between the months of October to May. Each meeting a book report is giving by a member and a speaker provides a presentation on topic of current medical interest.
