RESTRICTED.
To preserve Minnesota's archaeological record, in 1977, the Minnesota state legislature appropriated funds to the Minnesota Historical Society to properly collate existing data and acquire data by survey on additional significant sites. To implement the survey four goals were established: formulate models that predict the distribution of archaeological sites through the state; locate additional archaeological sites; update the archaeological site files; design and implement an archaeological site database.
Survey archaeologists conducted surveys in all or part of 31 counties (Anoka, Blue Earth, Brown, Carver, Cass, Chisago, Crow Wing, Dakota, Douglas, Faribault, Fillmore, Houston, Isanti, Itasca, Kanabec, Kandiyohi, Koochiching, Meeker, Mower, Murray, Nobles, Otter Tail, Pine, Red Lake, Redwood, Rice, Rock, St. Louis, Sherburne, Washington, Wright). Records include collection catalogs, correspondence, draft archaeological survey reports, field notes and maps, information from local collectors, inventories of rural archaeological historic sites, photographs and slides, random sample survey area documents, sample unit forms, site forms and maps, sketch maps, survey methodology, and surveyed quarter-quarter sections.
