Expand/CollapseBIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Christopher Columbus AndrewsChristopher Columbus Andrews was born October 27, 1829, in Hillsborough, New Hampshire. He attended local schools, completed his education at Francestown Academy, and studied law at Cambridge, Massachusetts.

After briefly practicing law in Newton and Boston, he migrated to Kansas in 1854. He promoted Kansas's interests in Washington, D.C. as an employee of United States Treasury Department before moving to St. Cloud, Minnesota Territory, in 1856. He represented Stearns County in the Minnesota State Senate in 1859, actively supporting the candidacy of Stephen A. Douglas in the presidential election of 1860, and published the Minnesota Union, supporting the Union cause. He originally enlisted as a private in the 3rd Minnesota Regiment and was taken prisoner by the Confederacy in 1862. After his release he participated in the Vicksburg Campaign and the capture of Little Rock, Arkansas. He played a significant role in reorganizing Arkansas as a free state. He assumed command of the Second Division of the XIII Corps and led forces in the siege of Fort Blakely, Alabama. Ultimately brevetted major general, he commanded the district of Mobile. He was assigned to the reconstruction efforts in Houston, Texas. He was mustered out of service January 15, 1866.

President Ulysses Grant appointed Andrews minister to Denmark in 1869. Instead of occupying that post, Andrews became minister to Sweden and Norway, a position he held from 1869 to 1877. Andrews also served as consul general to Brazil from 1882 to 1885.

After his return to Minnesota he championed responsible forestry and logging practices while serving as chief fire warden (1895-1905), forest commissioner (1905-1910) and secretary of the Forestry board (1911).

Andrews married Mary Baxter (1837-1893) in 1868. The couple had a daughter, Alice E. Andrews (1869-1961). Andrews died in St. Paul, September 21, 1922. He and his wife and their daughter are buried in Oakland Cemetery, St. Paul.

Expand/CollapseSCOPE AND CONTENTS

The papers include information on agriculture and dairy farming in Minnesota; the Republican party; the proposed Great Lakes-Mississippi River transportation route via the Fox and Wisconsin rivers; the government's Indian policy in the 1850s; and on the Kansas dispute of 1854. They relate the life of a government official representing the United States in Sweden and Norway, and relate Andrews' interest in the social and economic circumstances of the Swedish people. Some materials concern the development of forestry in Minnesota. Included also are a few miscellaneous papers of Andrews' daughter Alice.

The collection contains letters from political and military leaders of the day, including generals and officers of nearly all the Union armies and such men as Alexander Ramsey, William R. Marshall, Ignatius Donnelly, Cushman K. Davis, William D. Washburn, Jay Cooke, Richard H. Dana, John Sherman, Roscoe Conkling, and Benjamin H. Harrison. There is information on the Civil War, particularly the battles of Iuka and Corinth, about the Mobile campaign of 1865, and about army pensions.
