BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Donald Douglas Alsop was born in Duluth, Minnesota in 1927. He served in the United States Army from 1945 to 1946. Following his service, he obtained a Bachelor of Science in Law (BSL) from the University of Minnesota in 1950, and later a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from the University of Minnesota Law School in 1952.
His early career began as a clerk for Justice Thomas F. Gallagher in the Minnesota Supreme Court (1951-1952). He worked for a St. Paul law firm for two years before he settled into a private practice in New Ulm, Minnesota, where he worked from 1954 to 1974.
On August 8, 1974, President Richard Nixon nominated Donald Alsop for the United States District Court for the District of Minnesota to fill the judgeship vacated by Phillip Neville. The following day, Richard Nixon resigned from office. Despite Nixon’s resignation, incoming President Gerald Ford upheld Alsop’s nomination. Alsop received his commission on December 20, 1974 and took the oath of office on January 17, 1975.
Donald Alsop served as Chief Judge from 1985 to 1992 before obtaining senior status on August 28. 1992.
