BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Joseph Marius Morse was born in Duluth, Minnesota on August 17, 1943 to parents
Marius and Mary Morse. He grew up in the village of Dakota in Winona County,
Minnesota, where his family operated an apple orchard. Morse graduated from Cotter
High School in Winona, Minnesota. After graduation, he entered the Immaculate Heart
of Mary Seminary in Winona.

Morse’s studies were interrupted when Morse decided to travel to Meridian,
Mississippi in 1964 to assist with the African-American voter registration campaign
as part of the Mississippi Freedom Summer. Joe’s work in Meridian also included
helping to organize numerous rallies and boycotts, including a successful boycott of
the local Winn-Dixie supermarket, which discriminated against hiring
African-American cashiers. In Meridian, Joe Morse formed a life-long friendship
fellow CORE organizer George Smith. By the end of the summer, Morse joined the staff
of the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE), and unsuccessfully tried to take a leave
of absence from seminary, which ended his career ambitions in priesthood.

In 1967, Joe Morse was hired by the Child Development Group of Mississippi (CDGM) to
help develop Head Start programs in Kemper County, Mississippi. In his time in
Mississippi, Joe Morse was arrested numerous times by local authorities for his
organizing, and was a target of the Ku Klux Klan.

In the 1970s, Morse relocated to Boston, Massachusetts. He obtained a degree in
health education and administration from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst,
and began a long-term career in counseling men to prevent domestic violence and
serving victims of battery. In 1977, he co-founded EMERGE, an organization dedicated
to men opposing domestic violence.

In 1983, Morse returned to Winona, Minnesota, where he helped found a battered
women’s shelter in nearby La Crosse, Wisconsin, and founded the program Counseling
for Abusive Men (CAM). He also volunteered and served as a board member for the
Winona Women’s Resource Center (WRC), and helped develop the domestic violence
prevention programs Winona County Primary Prevention Project (PPP) and Beyond Tough
Guise (BTG).

Joe Morse was also a devoted local environmental activist and organizer, including:
organizing efforts against nuclear storage with the organization Prairie Island
Coalition Against Nuclear Storage (PICANS); successful efforts in banning frac sand
mining in the bluffs region in southeastern Minnesota with the Citizens Against
Silica Mining (CASM); efforts in preventing bluff land development; preventing trash
incineration facility development with the Citizens Against Incineration (CIN); and
efforts to preserve water quality and promote sustainable farming practices in
southeastern Minnesota with the Land Stewardship Project (LSP).

Joe Morse died in Winona, Minnesota at the age of 74 on September 28, 2017.

The papers document Joe Morse's career in counselling men and working to reduce
violence against women, including training and programming materials from his early
career years, as well as records from the numerous projects and programs Morse
helped found or developed in the Winona region (1970s-2010s).

The papers also document Joe Morse's civil rights activism and organizing work during
the Mississippi Freedom Summer in Meridian, Mississippi in 1964, and his work with
the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE), the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party
(MFDP), and the Mississippi with the Child Development Group of Mississippi (CDGM)
(1964-1967). Related papers include Morse's subsequent efforts to research,
document, educate, and commemorate his experiences in Mississippi, including
memorial presentations and tours in Mississippi, Martin Luther King Celebration
presentations, and presentations, oral history projects, and travel-study programs
coordinated with Winona State University (WSU) and other organizations (1960s,
1990s-2010s).

Lastly, the papers cover Morse's extensive social and environmentalism activism
organizing, especially at the local level in southeastern Minnesota. Includes
records from various organizing efforts focused on topics of nuclear power and waste
disposal, powerline development, land use and development, bluff preservation, water
conservation, sand frac mining, pollution, and ethical and sustainable farming
practices (1980s-2010s).

Men’s Action Network, which advocated for businesses, public, and private

exploitive and violent adult pay-per-view content. Winona County served as a

of Mary Seminary (Winona, Minn.) in 1964 to take part in voter
registration drive for Black voters as part of Freedom Summer in
Meridian, Mississippi, working with the Congress of Racial Equality
(CORE) and political organizing work with the Mississippi Freedom
Democratic Party (MFDP). Morse moved to Mississippi shortly after the
murders of civil rights workers James Chaney, Andrew Goodman, and
Michael Schwerner in Nesobha County, Mississippi. In Mississippi, Morse
helped to organize a successful boycott against the Winn-Dixie
supermarket chain, which denied employment to African Americans. Morse
was also hired by the Child Development Group of Mississippi to develop
Head Start programs in Kemper County, Mississippi. Morse's work made him
a target of the local Ku Klux Klan, and he was jailed six times by local
authorities for his civil rights work.
