BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
John Cockburn was born in Elmsville, New Brunswick, Canada on October 24, 1842, the son of Robert and Susan (Inglis Cassilis) Cockburn. He began studying medicine in Campobello, Maine and graduated from the Harvard Medical College in 1872. He practiced medicine in New Hampshire until 1879, when he moved to Zumbrota, Minnesota. Cockburn moved to Minneapolis in 1881.
During the years 1882-1889 Cockburn was Minneapolis City Physician and Health Commissioner, and a professor of physiology at Hamline University. He married Anna Clark in 1881 and together they had three children: Ethel, Edna, and Harvey. Cockburn died in Minneapolis on February 5, 1911.
