Certificates of incorporation and registration, constitutions and bylaws, minutes, bulletins, recital programs, financial statements, clippings, and membership data of the American Guild of Music Teachers and its Minneapolis and St. Paul chapters. The guild was initially formed in 1926 as the Minneapolis Guild of Independent Music Teachers to raise the standards of musical arts and music teaching. It was incorporated in 1929 as the American Guild of Music Teachers and the Minneapolis Guild became its first chapter. Included within the collection are correspondence with congressmen on legislation concerning the arts, and bulletins (1935-1937) of Alpha Gamma Mu, a fraternity of music teachers and students.

Includes minutes of annual, board, and membership meetings as well as financial statements. Scattered throughout the minutes are copies of the Guild's teaching and examination standards, code of ethics, course syllabi and curricula, student recital rules, and their National Organizing Bulletin, an irregularly published series of pamphlets that describes the Guild's formation, organization, purpose, bylaws, and history.

Contains bulletins of both the Minneapolis Guild, 1927-1947, and the St. Paul Guild, 1949-1958. Also includes correspondence between John G. Hinderer and individuals regarding the following topics: the Pepper-Coffee Bill which would have created a Permanent Bureau of the Fine Arts, which was opposed by the Guild (1938); opposition to the Fine Arts Bill (H.R. 5397) introduced by Charles R. Howell of New Jersey (1954); letters from congressmen on legislation concerned with the arts (1955-1956); and letters from educators throughout the country relating to the certification of music teachers (1957-1958). Some public officials of note whose letters appear in the correspondence are: Sherman Adams, Walter H. Judd, Carroll D. Kearns, Coya Knutson, Eugene J. McCarthy, Lee Metcalf, Frederick G. Payne, George M. Rhodes, John M. Robison, John Sparkman, and Alexander Wiley.
