BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Born on February 20, 1873 in Rochester, New York, Ferdinand Uebel first came to Minnesota in 1901 when he worked for Monasch Litho. Co. on a contract making school charts for the Minneapolis Board of Education. After working for various firms in Milwaukee, Chicago, Rochester, and Cleveland, Uebel returned to Minnesota in 1906 to work for the Standard Printing Company on Rice Street in St. Paul.
A member of the American Turners since 1892, Uebel took his first fencing lesson through the Rochester Turnverein at the age of 16. In Minnesota, through his connection with the St. Paul Turners, Uebel organized the first of annual fencing bouts sponsored by the Northwestern Gymnastic Society in 1928. He was an active member of the fencing league, having served as the League's president at least once, as well as an active member of the Northwestern Gymnastic Society, having served as its vice president for a number of years. He coached fencing teams at the University of Minnesota, 1936-1954, and also instructed fencing classes for the St. Paul Turners, Hamline University, Central High School, and other clubs and schools.
Ferdinand's father, H. August Uebel, a tailor who immigrated with his father from Germany to Rochester, New York, was active in the Rochester Turnverein and was a fifty-year member of the American Turners. Uebel's mother immigrated to the U.S. from the town of Feldkirch in Tyrol.
Ferdinand Uebel married Louise Lang, of Rochester, New York, on December 20, 1905. The Uebels had five children. Ferdinand Uebel retired from the Smyth Printing Company in St. Paul in 1948 and died in 1959.
Biographical information was taken from the collection.
