Represented in the papers are the descendants of two brothers, the sons of Moses DePuy; Moses DePuy, Jr. (1761-1842) and Jacobus DePuy (1772-1813). Jacobus DePuy married Esther DeWitt, and they had 11 children, among them James I. DePuy (1799-1864). James I. DePuy married Evaline Bailey (d. 1888). James and Evaline, their children William, Sarah, and Harriet, William's wife Margaret Ann Peck, Harriet's husband Isaac Pope, and Evaline's nephew Ansel K. Bailey are represented in the papers as is Moses DePuy, Jr.'s great-grandson, William Remer DePuy.

A genealogical chart is included in the papers.

Expand/CollapseSCOPE AND CONTENTS

The materials from 1845 through 1855 related directly to James I. and Evaline Bailey DePuy and their children. They include a birth and death record (undated) for the family of James' father Jacobus DePuy, and letters (1845-1849) from James and his daughters Harriet and Sarah (in Fayetteville, New York and Wisconsin) to his son William and William's wife Margaret in Yorkville, Wisconsin. The letters contain information on family and friends, Harriet's teaching experiences and her study of the tailor's trade, the sale of James' New York business in preparation for moving West (1847), and Harriet's marriage to Isaac Pope (1849).

There is also an undated latter from Evaline to their children; poems and letters to Margaret, with comments on the Peck family of Bridgeport, New York (undated and 1847); and letters from Harriet and Isaac Pope and other Pope family members in Wisconsin, detailing family activities and Isaac's work as a cooper (1851, 1855).

The remainder of the papers (1878-1907) pertain to Joshua B. and Alice M. Buck of Morristown (Rice County), Minnesota (1870s) and Minneapolis (1900s). Alice was a DePuy family descendant, but her place in the lineage could not be determined from the available data. Letters to Alice concern her attempt to trace her DePuy/Bailey family lineage. Her correspondents include James I. DePuy's cousins William R. DePuy of Grafton, North Dakota, and Henry F. DePuy of New York City (1904), and Evaline's nephew Ansel K. Bailey of Decorah, Iowa (1906-1907). Also present is Joshua's Cannon Valley Library Society membership certificate (1887).

The papers also include an anonymous memoranda book, the first 10 pages of which contain miscellaneous financial entries (December 1888, 1891-June 1893). The remainder of the volume is blank, except for several unidentified figures on the last page.

The oversize materials comprise a genealogical chart and deeds and mortgages. The genealogical chart traces the family of Moses DePuy, Jr., from 1759 to 1903. It was prepared by his great-grandson William R. DePuy in 1904 (see William's letter to Alice M. Buck, July 11, 1904). The deeds and mortgages relate to Morristown (Minnesota) land transactions of Joshua B. and Alice M. Buck, of Isaac and Harriet DePuy Pope, and of W. H. Birdsall as executor of Isaac's estate.
