Expand/CollapseHISTORICAL NOTE

The Crane Island Association was founded in 1906, the brainchild of Charles E. Woodward. Woodward, along with a group of other families, mostly parishioners of the Bethlehem Presbyterian Church in Minneapolis, purchased the land on the island in Lake Minnetonka and formed an association with the purpose of creating a community of summer homes. The association called for private ownership of 26 individual lots and a common ground and was governed by a board of directors.

In 1991 the island community was placed on the National Historic Register.

Expand/CollapseSCOPE AND CONTENTS

Minutes (1906-1984), maps, financial information, stockholder lists, and newsletters of an organization of summer home owners on Crane Island in Lake Minnetonka, Minnesota.

Included is the association's nomination to the National Register of Historic Places (28 p., [ca. 1991]). This gives a review of the area and the association and relates this significance in two contexts: Minnesota Tourism and Recreation in the Lake Regions, 1870-1945, and Urban Centers, 1870-1940.
