BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Adam Marty was born in Switzerland on August 2, 1839 and immigrated with his grandparents to St. Louis in 1846. He moved to Stillwater, Minnesota in 1849 where he worked as a printer. Following the outbreak of the Civil War, Marty enlisted in Company B of the First Minnesota Infantry Regiment, and was soon promoted to corporal. Marty was shot in the thigh at Gettysburg and spent the remainder of the war with the Second Invalid Detachment at a hospital in Philadelphia.
After being musterd out at the war's end, Marty returned to Stillwater. He served as Washington County deputy sheriff (1882-1890) and then served two terms as sheriff. He was also very active in veterans' and pioneers' associations including service as G.A.R. commander of Minnesota (1881- ), secretary of the St. Croix Valley Old Settlers Association (1897- ), and commander of the Muller G.A.R. post of Stillwater until his death.
Marty married Augusta Burrow of Stillwater; the couple had four children: Mrs. E. W. Brown, Carl Marty, Raymond Marty, and Milton Marty. Adam and Augusta moved to St. Paul in 1910, where she died in 1922. Adam Marty died in St. Paul on February 6, 1923.
