HISTORICAL NOTE
The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) was organized in 1929 in Corpus Christi, Texas to promote social, economic, educational, and cultural opportunities for people of Hispanic origins. A Minnesota chapter (Council 328) was organized in St. Paul in 1959 and was active until December, 1968. Chapters in Minneapolis and Albert Lea were organized as well.
SCOPE AND CONTENTS
The collection is divided into two series: seven folders of national LULAC material and 16 folders of Council 328 records. The national material consists of a constitution and bylaws booklet (1960); some national convention programs (1959-1961, 1967); and 18 scattered issues of LULAC News (1960-1972), the national newsletter. A handbook (1960-1961) and a report on a school sponsored by LULAC also are included.
The Council 328 records are organized alphabetically by document type or subject. There are programs, tickets, and record books of the Blanco y Negro (Black and White) Dance sponsored annually by Council 328, as well as programs for two similar dances in Chicago in 1960 and 1968. Contracts, correspondence, financial reports, membership rosters, and four issues of the Council 328 newsletter follow. Minutes (1963), correspondence on movie bookings (Spanish-language movies sponsored by Council 328 at a neighborhood theater), state convention programs, and some LULAC volunteer buttons are also included.
