Expand/CollapseHISTORICAL NOTE

The articles of association (approved Sept. 18, 1865) state that the asylum was founded as a benevolent and charitable association to provide aid to destitute and orphaned children; it also arranged for adoptions. The original signers of the Articles were Stella Selby, Mary D. Postlewaite, and Hester A. Singleton. The asylum was located on Marshall Avenue and St. Albans Street, and the records indicate that it was supported by many prominent St. Paul women and some St. Paul business firms.
