The articles of association (approved Sept. 18, 1865) state that the asylum was
founded as a benevolent and charitable association to provide aid to destitute and
orphaned children; it also arranged for adoptions. The original signers of the
Articles were Stella Selby, Mary D. Postlewaite, and Hester A. Singleton. The asylum
was located on Marshall Avenue and St. Albans Street, and the records indicate that
it was supported by many prominent St. Paul women and some St. Paul business
firms.

The collection includes one folder containing the following unbound materials: notes
(undated) on the history of the asylum by Robert A. Rosenthal; a list of asylum
matrons (1865-1898); a list of contributors (1911-1916); certification of the
institution by the State Board of Control (January 24, 1921); a copy of the Minnesota History accessions note (1937); and a letter
(January 21, 1937) relating to the donation of the minute book (1883-1892) to the
Minnesota Historical Society by the Rachel Mason Estate.
The rest of the collection consists of eight bound volumes. A letterbook (1888-1889)
kept by Katharine M. Beals contains information on prospective adoptions, on
individual children, on adoptive and birth parents, and on routine business of the
organization. Two minute books of the Board of Managers (1883-1926) record monthly
and annual meetings and provide details on staff, adoption matters, finances, and
routine problems. There are also four volumes recording cash receipts and
disbursements (1910-1920) and dues payments (1917-1923), as well as a check register
(1920-1931).
